On Pentecost, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit — not as a vague force, an abstract doctrine, or an optional add-on to faith, but as God’s own living presence abiding with us and in us. In John 14, Jesus promises his disciples, “I will not leave you orphaned.” This promise comes to people whose courage, understanding, and love all have limits.
The Holy Spirit still matters because the Spirit meets us where our love reaches its limit and forms the love of Christ in us. The Spirit is not the pressure to be more faithful; the Spirit is the presence of God making faithfulness possible. Acts 2 shows this promise becoming public: the Spirit gathers people across difference, forms a community of shared life, and creates glad and generous hearts.
